Fancy Winners at the National Poultry Show 2011
The Fancy Feed Company recently attended the National Poultry Show at Stoneleigh and was pleased to see plenty of Fancy poultry on winner’s row! These included Richard Brett’s Champion Brahma and Champion Orpington, Trevor Chamber’s winning Silver Appleyard drake and James and Amelia Nelson’s (Rare Breed Poultry) winning Poland and Silkie!
Amongst the many Fancy winners was 12 year old James Buck with his amazing Modern Game Bird! James started keeping chickens at the age of 6 and began showing them at just 7 years old. His brother had always kept chickens so James’s interest grew from watching and helping his brother. His favourite breed is naturally the Moder Game as they are “unusual and great to look at” but he also keeps Rouen ducks, German Pekin ducks and Asiatic breeds with about 45 chickens and ducks in total!
James loves the atmosphere of the shows and always prepares the birds himself His typical routine includes getting up early in the morning to feed/water them and checking they are okay after school. James uses Fancy Feed Breeder and Show Pellets and says “they look better and lay better than on any other food”!
Weekends are spent cleaning the drinkers and mucking out and then, 2 weeks before a show he starts to show pen train them. They get a shower 3 days before a show and go into a clean show pen. The night before a show James cleans their faces, legs and feet. He wipes feathers with a damp sponge and, on the morning of the show, puts vaseline on their feet and baby oil their faces as well as a special spray on their feathers.
At the Nationals this year he got his best result so far winning the 'Best opposite sex' large modern as well as both male classes and his next goal is to get on Championship Row! When he’s not looking after his chickens James can be found checking out the latest news on the Modern Game Club website and is currently voting for Amelia Lily to win X-Factor!
