Poultry
- “Greens” like carrot tops or cabbage leaves are great for penned hens to peck at if they can’t free range
Waterfowl
- Mixed corn can be given in a shallow bowl of clean water to encourage “dabbling” and avoid it being eaten by other birds.
- Powdery foods, like layers’ mash, are not suited to ducks as they can clog their nostrils
- Geese are herbivores and like to graze short fresh grass
Goats
- Forage is best fed in a raised rack to satisfy a goat’s need to browse rather than graze
- Avoid using haynets for goats as they tend to get themselves caught in them
- Feeding hay or fresh forage before giving concentrates will initiate chewing and saliva production and aid bicarbonate production therefore buffering of the acids of the rumen to help maintain a stable rumen pH. This is especially important at the morning feeding.
- Mouldy feed or forage is potentially lethal to goats as the mould can upset the bacterial population of the rumen.
